Last year (2017) I was having trouble with my new Dell XPS and decided to contact (forget if it was Dell or Microsoft...but Dell would have made more sense since the problem was with dead USBs) via their chat line. This is important: I contacted them, they didn't contact me. Somebody working in this office is operating a scam on the side. We had a very long talk. I got suckered into believing I needed a firewall, that McAfee didn't supply it, only an antivirus. And I paid $410 for a 5 year security plug. At the time I was really floored because he "took over my machine", like he could see my screen. I did not like that. I continued to go along anyway, believing he was from the legit company that I had contacted. His phony name "Mark" and phone number is now on the bottom of my screen: 888-556-4559. I am afraid to touch it to delete it. Probably can't. Fast forward to Dec. of this year and I get a call from somebody with a non-western accent who said my account had been "red flagged" because it had been "compromised" and I needed to give him some information. He confused me utterly because up to this time I thought Mark was legit. In the end I said I would call him back after I did some checking. I asked for his number. He gave me 855-222-6388. 855 is Cambodia. Then I did a lot of checking re these phone numbers and found a lot of these warning websites and it is only now that I have realized I spent $410 for nothing. I suspect these creeps also monitor sites like this so they can attempt to stay ahead of the game. I will be changing my bank account and all my email numbers. Hell, maybe this forum is a scam too....

This happened to me also and they got me for a check for 250.00. I will cancel that Monday morning. You can get around this by doing a full re-boot and a good anti-virus program.

My computer was hacked. I found this out by receiving a flashing screen stating so accompanied with a constant beeping sound. The screen provided the subject tel. # to contact for assistance. Since I could do nonething with my computer, I called them. They said the required security software to clear out the infection would cost $399.99. Since they had me by the balls, I agreed to pay them. However, when I went to do so via my debit card, my bank blocked the payment, froze my card, and issued ,me a new one. The co. passed itself off as 'Micro Tech Support Co.', which was based in China. I personally suspect that that was why my bank blocked payment off of my card. Tyler, the sales rep for Micro Tech Support Co. then went on to propose that I go to a nearby WalMart and purchase an 'international pre-paid card' for $400; then, call him back at the above subject tel. #, and provide him with the account # on the card. I went and did so, or so I thought, only to find out that it was a domestic pre-paid card that I had bought. Therefore, no go. Given the above comments, and how much they are asking for, I am now quite concerned if I should still try and obtain this 'international pre-paid card' or not. Interestingly enough, the above co. already installed the necessary security software while all of this stuff was going on, such that now, thankfully, I have full computer access capability and functioning again. Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
